Applied Questions
Applied questions take ideas or themes that are in the text and generalise them to your life and experiences. Mostly, they are questions that can be answered with someone’s opinion. There is no right answer, but you need to give a reason for your answer. Applied questions can be about:
1. Themes that are in the text.
2. Choices that the characters made and your opinion on these choices.
3. Events that happened in the text and your opinion or experience with these events.

Identifying the message from the theme
Every text has an underlying message that the author is trying to tell the reader. This is linked directly to the theme and is expressed as a sentence. For example, many texts have the theme 'Friendship'. However, these texts may carry slightly different messages. Some examples may include:
Friends are important in helping us through difficult times
Friends help us learn more about ourselves
If friendships are not looked after, they can be broken
