WRITING AN INTRODUCTION
Today you will be turning your arguments and thoughts into
persuasive master pieces. Your first task is to read over the newspaper article

sanction’ to gain some valuable background information on your
persuasive topic.

YOUR PERSUASIVE TOPIC:
Should the government enforce families to immunize their children?
STEP 1: In your English books draw a table with for and against and brainstorm arguments for and against the topic.
STEP 2: Choose whether you will be arguing for or against.
STEP 3: Select your best 3 arguments that will turn into your 3 main body paragraphs and write these/highlight these in your English book.
STEP 4: It’s time to write your introduction. What information do we need to include in our introduction? Remember that your introduction is the first thing the reader will look at, so we need to ensure that it attracts their attention. If the Introduction is not convincing, do you think they will read the rest of your argument? (It MUST catch the reader’s attention)
So what do we need to include in an introduction? Plug in your ear phones and lets find out!! Watch the below YouTube clip on writing a quality (good) introduction.

STEP 5: It’s your
turn now. Write your draft copy of your introduction for the above topic in your English books.
Remember you need to include:
1. Attention Catcher (Persuasive technique)– You immediately want to persuade the reader to agree with your point of view, so you need a punchy line to get their attention.
2. Contention (Point of view) - A thesis is a clearly worded statement telling readers exactly what the writer intends to do in the essay. After gaining the reader’s interest, clearly state the position of your essay.
3. Preview of Main Points (List main arguments) - The preview briefly states the main points that will be argued in the essay. The preview is not where the arguments are developed. The preview merely summarizes each point in as few words as possible. Each body paragraph should have one main point. All of the main points should be concisely stated in the preview.
