Fractured fairy tales
Fairytales were often told to convey a warning or moral to children. One of the most popular sources for fairytales is the Brothers Grimm, their collections still sell well today (over 150 years after they died!)
Retelling
The retelling of fairytales has become very popular lately, especially in films and television. A lot of authors are also retelling fairytales in their novels, some adding new twists to modernise the story. You’ve probably seen at least one Disney animation of a fairytale growing up (Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, The Fog Prince, The Little Mermaid, and the list goes on!).
Fractured Fairytales
When the author twists the traditional fairytales so much that the core meaning of the story changes, this is called a fractured fairytale. Often fairytales are fractured to place them in a more modern setting or to add humour. The movie Shrek, with many famous fairytale (and nursery-rhyme) characters interacting, is a fractured fairytale. Sometimes the story will be fractured to meet modern views. Original fairytales depicted helpless girls wanting nothing more than a prince to marry, and beauty as the most important asset - not acceptable beliefs for today’s stories!
Learning Intention - To develop an understanding of the structure of a fractured fairy tale
Success Criteria - I will be successful if I can:
1. Identify a possible variation on the complication
2. Identify a resolution that results in the problem being fixed for the main character
3. Write the modified complication and resolution in the style of a fairy tale (11 common elements)
YOUR TASK
1. Watch the clip 'Fractured Fairy Tales - Snow White'.
2. Open up the handout and work through the accompanying questions.
